Na Białoruś dotarło sześć rosyjskich myśliwców Su-27 i trzy wojskowe samoloty transportowe - informuje resort obrony Rosji.

Maszyny trafiły bazy Sił Powietrznych Białorusi w Bobrujsku, w obwodzie mohylewskim, położonej w południowo-wschodniej części kraju, 200 kilometrów od granic Ukrainy i Rosji.

Putting Putin in his place By Bohdan O. Szuprowicz When Ukraine became independent in 1994, it inherited the third largest nuclear weapons arsenal in the world after Russia and USA. It included about 45 strategic bombers, 176 ICBM’s, and another 1080 long-range cruise missiles, all armed with about 5,000 strategic and tactical nuclear warheads. At the time Ukraine’s nuclear arsenal was larger than those of Britain, China and France combined. Almost immediately USA, Russia and the UK, pounced upon the newly independent Ukraine, demanding nuclear disarmament and ratification of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In return the three nuclear powers offered national security guarantees. As a result by 1996 Ukraine destroyed or dismantled its nuclear weapons arsenal and lost its nuclear power status. In 1994, a Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances pledged to “Respect Ukrainian independence and sovereignty within its existing borders” and “Refrain from the threat or use of force against Ukraine”. It was signed by USA, UK and Russia, while France and China provided security assurances in the form of diplomatic notes. Recent invasion of the Crimea by the Russians and the threat to take over additional areas of Ukraine flies in the face of those assurances of 20 years ago. Clearly, Putin is taking advantage of the remarquable timidity of President Obama and his lack of understanding international power politics. Obama foreign policy underscores human rights which encourages unrest among oppressed minorities. They believe in diplomatic solutions and have no appetite for military means. It is unbelievable that Obama administration thinks it can convince Iran to abandon development of nuclear weapons. It has not been able to stop nuclear North Korea, which is a pipsqueak nation by comparison. It clearly has no chance in persuading Russia to abandon its objectives in Ukraine. Putin’s action puts an end to the long-standing belief of many states that nuclear powers will guarantee their security. In previous years many countries did not acquire nuclear weapons even though they had the know-how and access to weapons-grade materials. Some like South Africa, Belarus and Kazakhstan, also destroyed or dismantled their nuclear arsenals. Others like Israel, India, Pakistan, North Korea and Iran are determined to become nuclear powers. Incidentally there are about 25 countries in the world where nuclear materials suitable for production of atom bombs do exist. As a result we are entering a new era of nuclear terror blackmail. It is all the more dangerous because it will be practiced by terrorists, insurgents and non-government organizations (NGO’s) demanding freedom, autonomy or independence from oppression or occupation. They will threaten nuclear powers demanding action on their behalf. United States is a prime target for such blackmail because it encourages democratic opposition, and has economic and military means to impose sanctions, demand action, and enforce political change. Ukraine is the latest case in point. The only response Putin will understand at this stage of the game is a squadron of stealth fighter planes armed with nuclear missiles sent to the Ukraine immediately. Atomic veterans in that country will be more than happy to welcome such a gesture and will be ready and able to assist in deployment and operation. It will be the reverse of the Cuban Missile Crisis when the US was blackmailed to pull out its nuclear missiles from Turkey. We are only a few steps away from a major conflict. It is just as well to confront the situation in the strongest possible manner, before it is too late.
